Jezebel on supporting a friend through abortion, miscarriage

Jezebel recently published a blog post entitled How to Help a Friend Through an Abortion, a follow-up to another post about How to Help a Friend Deal with Miscarriage. It is heartening to see abortion and miscarriage discussed in a public platform in a way that highlights the uniqueness of everyone’s experiences, as well as the importance of a supporter, a listener, a friend. Sounds like a doula to me!

Abortion doulas do get a shout-out, though as Radical Doula notes, most abortion doulas work through partnerships with clinics, and less commonly as sought out through individuals.

Quick Hit: So what is an Abortion Doula?

Still wondering what exactly an abortion doula is or does? The Abortion Gang has a great post up today featuring an interview with The Doula Project in an effort to help answer that very question. A couple of great quotes:

Any medical procedure can be scary, but facing an abortion can be especially frightening for some because of the wealth of inaccurate information and the stigma surrounding the procedure.

and:

As reproductive justice activists remind us, the choices most of us are able to make about our reproductive health are greatly affected by our circumstances, which are constrained by socioeconomic status, race, gender, sexuality, nationality, legal status, etc.

Best of all, the piece includes a list of abortion doula groups that are popping up across the U.S. – including yours truly! You can read the whole piece here.

Exciting News and Updates!

We are pleased to announce that the DC Doulas for Choice Collective has proudly partnered with two area clinics that provide full spectrum reproductive health services to client-patients in the Washington DC area. That said, we are looking to submit proposals to additional clinics in the neighboring clinics in nearby areas. If you know or are affiliated with a clinic that could benefit from our volunteer services, please let us know!

Additionally, comrades from the Doula Project in New York will be coming down to train us in early January. Shortly thereafter, we will go through the training processes for the individual clinics and begin providing services. New year, new connections, new volunteers – it’s all very exciting!

Finally, if you are interested in donating to the DC Doulas for Choice Collective, please email us at dcdoulasforchoice@gmail.com for more information. We are funded entirely through donations and our fundraising efforts. We would be greatly appreciative of any money you can comfortably contribute. No amount is too small!

First Meeting!

The D.C. Doulas for Choice Collective met as a group for the first time last night. We are excited to get moving with our work providing abortion doula services to people in the D.C. area. In our meeting, we talked about our goals for the group (short and long term), our various skills that we bring to this work, and our passion and commitment to providing doula services for underserved people seeking a basic reproductive health care procedure: abortion.

Stay tuned for information about fundraising events in the coming weeks and months!
