Application
Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the DC Doulas for Choice Collective! We have been providing abortion support since 2011 and are excited to welcome new volunteers as we continue to grow our capacity to serve people seeking reproductive health services in the greater Washington area.
We are excited to be growing our team and accepting applications for our 2026 volunteer cohort! Applications are due by June 21st, 2026.
Becoming a Doula
We typically train a new cohort of abortion doulas each fall. The application process consists of the following steps:
- Submit an application
- Once all applications have been evaluated, we will send you an invitation to interview if we think you might be a good match for the Collective.
- Once all applications have been evaluated, we will send you an invitation to interview if we think you might be a good match for the Collective.
- Attend an in-person group interview
- This is a relatively informal opportunity for us to get to know one another and for you to ask questions about the Collective.
- If, after the interview, both you and your interviewers feel it’s a good fit, you will be invited to participate in our training weekend.
- Join our two-day, in-person training
- The training is an opportunity for you to meet other doulas, learn abortion support skills, and grow in your understanding of the ways in which systems of oppression and movements for justice impact people who have abortions.
- After the training, you will be invited to join the Collective if the fit is right.
- Shadow experienced doulas in the clinic
- We require that newly-trained doulas shadow an experienced doula at the clinic(s) where they intend to volunteer at least twice before signing up for a solo doula shift. This is to allow the new doula to observe different patient-support techniques; learn the flow of each clinic; become familiar with the staff; and receive feedback from an experienced doula on how they interact with patients.
We require masks at all in-person interviews and training events. As a DC-based collective, we are only open to doulas located in the DMV.
